Metals 103: Introduction to Torch use: Theory and Safety[edit]

The Metals 103 is a non-certificate class to introduce the use of the shop's torches to anneal, join or fuse metal. You will hear about the certificate classes offered, and learn when you can use the torches independently at TinkerMill. This class demonstrates the differences between soldering, brazing, and welding, annealing and tempering metal. It also provides a bit of theory and terminology for this practice.

Metals 104: Part three of the certification series, Torch application and safety[edit]

  • Certification: Metals 104 final class in the certification series, complete the certification project

This class is a certification class for independent use of the shop's single fuel torch (Acetylene-Air). It provides:

  • Theory: Annealing different metals, silver soldering
  • Instruction on the safe and appropriate use of torches for basic jewelry-making (annealing and silver alloy soldering)
  • Instruction to use tools that may be used only with annealed metal
  • List of tools and techniques requiring annealing (e.g.: texturing, raising, folding, riveting, making headpins)
  • Additional self-study resources
  • Completion of sample project- utilizing basic soldering joints
  • Open Studio time to practice using the tools safely and complete the sampler project required for certification

Metals 200: Torch use - Dual fuel[edit]

This is a class certification for independent use of the shop's dual fuel torch rig (oxy-acetylene). It provides:

  • Theory: molten metal and high heat applications
  • Instruction of safe use of the torch for casting and larger structural soldering.
  • Safety review and introduction of dual fuel specific safety equipment.
  • References for self study
  • Hands on, supervised practice.
  • Open Studio time to practice using the tools safely and complete the sampler project required for certification

Metals 305 is a non-certificate class to introduce the use of the shop's equipment to alter the surface appearance of metal using an electrical charge and/or chemical means. You will hear about the certificate classes offered which allow you to use this equipment independently at TinkerMill. This class explains and gives some examples of the differences between these surface treatment methods. It also provides a bit of theory and terminology for this practice.

Description

This class is designed for discovering different patination techniques, this is the process of mixed layering of chemicals to achieve different coloration effects on metal. This is not a regularly scheduled class, a safety with chemicals intro is required to use the shop chemicals.


Metals 308: Fold Forming[edit]

  • Duration: 3-4 hrs
  • Required for: construction of folded forms, using folds in jewelry and sculpture


Description This class is designed to explore the realm of folding metal repeatedly to create interesting forms. This could create a piece all on its own or be the base for further process exploration. The tools used in this process are minimal. Classes are scheduled quarterly on our website. The class covers some basic fold patterns, proper tool use and order of operations, as well as resource suggestions, idea paths and much more.


Metals 309: Lost Wax Casting[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100-101, suggested prerequisite classes: Metals 102, 103-104, Metals 400
  • Certification: candidate may be certified for independent use of casting equipment upon completion of 3 successful casts
  • Duration: 3 classes,2-3 hours each
  • Required for: casting an object in metal. Independent use of casting equipment, earned through three additional casting events.


This class instructs on how to produce a metal object by way of the Lost Wax method. Wax is carved, then a mold is made of it. The mold is then placed in the kiln to melt out or lose the wax. The molten metal is then poured into the plaster cavity. It Provides:

  • In depth introduction to investment (plaster mold)
  • Demonstration of processes
  • Hands on practice and safe use of equipment.

Metals 310: Raising[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100. It is suggested that you complete the certification cycle. This will expedite your project process.
  • Certification: No certification is offered with this class.

  • Required for: Making bowls/vessels, anticlastic and clastic forms, moving metal without compressing.


Description This class is designed to instruct on the concept of moving metal without compression to create three dimensional objects from flat sheet using only a hammer and stake.
