The dust collector is an essential tool in the wood shop. Be sure to use it.

To clean the dust collector, be sure to wear a respirator, and then

  1. Take off the filter;
  2. Dump what you can in the trash;
  3. With the filter upside down, tap the edges firmly but not too hard to dislodge the dust; and
  4. Dump it out again.

Repeat the last two steps until the filter is clean. Things that will ruin the expensive filter are tearing the filter paper (dont rub the shopvac against it), and bending the outside metal mesh by tapping too hard.
