Metals 100: Introduction to the Jewelry and Metal Crafts Shop[edit]

  • Prerequisite for: All certificate classes

Metals 100 is a comprehensive introduction to the Jewelry and Metal Craft shop within TinkerMill. It is a non-certificate class but is a prerequisite for any shop certification class. It introduces the shop's tool groups, safety and guidelines, self-study resources, and examples of the types of projects best suited to this shop.

Metals 100 covers:

  • Safety first
  • Shop expectations, (Ferrous vs Nonferrous) attire,priority use, scale matters
  • Tool groups in the shop
  • Overview of curriculum paths and classes to become certified for independent tool use
  • Resources for independent study and collaboration: books, magazines, shop web portal, TM experts, organizations, and suitable project suggestions

Metals 101: Basic Hand Tools & Fabrication[edit]

Class Handout - Metals 101

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100
  • Certification: Metals 101 - Hand tools
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Required for: Completing the certification series. Metals 102 and 103

Metals 101 is a certification class, part one. The series of classes will certify a student for independent use of the shop for basic fabrication. This class provides:

  • Instruction on the safe and appropriate use of un-powered hand tools
  • List of tools that may be used while creating the certification project.
  • Additional self-study references and list of resources: e.g.: Wire+Metals Text, Web
  • Time in class or at Open Studio times to practice using the tools and complete the sampler project required for certification
  • Certification sampler project: Described in class handout

Metals 102: Power Tools & Uses[edit]

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Required for: Specified project classes

Metals 102 is a certification class for independent use of the shop's listed power tools. It provides:

  • Instruction on the safe and appropriate use of shop's power tools
  • List of tools included in this certification
  • Additional self-study references and list of resources: e.g.: Wire+Metals Text, Web
  • Time in class or at Open Studio times to practice using the tools and complete the sampler project required for certification
  • Certification sampler project: Described in class handout

Metals 103: Introduction to Torch use: Theory and Safety[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100 and 101
  • Certification: none
  • Duration: 60 minutes, online with quiz in person.
  • Required for: Metals 104, part three of the shop certification series.

The Metals 103 is a non-certificate class to introduce the use of the shop's torches to anneal, join or fuse metal. You will hear about the certificate classes offered, and learn when you can use the torches independently at TinkerMill. This class demonstrates the differences between soldering, brazing, and welding, annealing and tempering metal. It also provides a bit of theory and terminology for this practice.

Metals 104: Part three of the certification series, Torch application and safety[edit]

Class Handout - Metals 200-201

  • Prerequisite: Metals 103
  • Certification: Metals 104 final class in the certification series, complete the certification project
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Required for: Independent use of the shop, future specific technique classes, independent fabrication, teaching classes

This class is a certification class for independent use of the shop's single fuel torch (Acetylene-Air). It provides:

  • Theory: Annealing different metals, silver soldering
  • Instruction on the safe and appropriate use of torches for basic jewelry-making (annealing and silver alloy soldering)
  • Instruction to use tools that may be used only with annealed metal
  • List of tools and techniques requiring annealing (e.g.: texturing, raising, folding, riveting, making headpins)
  • Additional self-study resources
  • Completion of sample project- utilizing basic soldering joints
  • Open Studio time to practice using the tools safely and complete the sampler project required for certification

Tools used in the certification course:

  • Acetylene/AIR torch (not Oxygen/Acetylene torch)
  • Soldering station - materials and tools (solder, pickle, quench, hand tools, etc.)
  • Rolling mill
  • 3-in-1, bending brake
  • Review of dapping block and disc cutter, use of punches


Metals 200: Torch use - Dual fuel[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100-101, Metals 102, Metals 103-104
  • Certification: Dual Fuel torches
  • Duration: 90-120 minutes
  • Required for: casting and specific projects
  • How to register: You will need to contact the current shop captain to arrange an independent class. This class is only offered on a need basis.


This is a class certification for independent use of the shop's dual fuel torch rig (oxy-acetylene). It provides:

  • Theory: molten metal and high heat applications
  • Instruction of safe use of the torch for casting and larger structural soldering.
  • Safety review and introduction of dual fuel specific safety equipment.
  • References for self study
  • Hands on, supervised practice.
  • Open Studio time to practice using the tools safely and complete the sampler project required for certification

Metals 300: Introduction to Enameling Basics, Dry processes[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100-101, Suggested requirements: Metals 102. 200-201
  • Certification: None
  • Duration: 3 hrs
  • Required for: Applying glass to metal. Metals 301-304


An introduction to our Enameling studio and the possibilities within. Students will experience hands on practice applying dry enamel to metal, creating a small object. It provides:

  • Safety first! -Learn how to protect yourself while using this process.
  • Introduction to Enamel as a material.
  • Covers the extended uses and possible techniques with Enamel.
  • Demonstration of set up, application, firing and cleaning.
  • Discussion of Kiln use and safety. NON-Cert.
  • Safe hands on practice of process.

Metals 305: Introduction to Chemical and Electrolytic Surface Treatments[edit]

  • Certification: no
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Required for: Metals 306 (Electrolytic Etching), Metals 307 (Chemical Patinas and Inks)

Metals 305 is a non-certificate class to introduce the use of the shop's equipment to alter the surface appearance of metal using an electrical charge and/or chemical means. You will hear about the certificate classes offered which allow you to use this equipment independently at TinkerMill. This class explains and gives some examples of the differences between these surface treatment methods. It also provides a bit of theory and terminology for this practice.

Metals 306: Electrolytic Etching[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 305 intro to etching
  • Certification: utilization of the etching equipment.
  • Duration: 90-120 minutes
  • Required for: any etching related projects.


This class is designed to teach safe practices and methods for electrolytic etching, etching with electricity. It provides: >br />

  • Demonstration of applying resist
  • Demonstration of etching
  • Hands on application and practice from start to finish
  • Certification upon completion of set up, project complete and resulting clean up.

Metals 307: Applying Chemical Patinas and Inks[edit]

  • Certification: N/A
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Required for: Coloration of metal


Description

This class is designed for discovering different patination techniques, this is the process of mixed layering of chemicals to achieve different coloration effects on metal. This is not a regularly scheduled class, a safety with chemicals intro is required to use the shop chemicals.

Metals 308: Fold Forming[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100-101 Suggested prerequisites are Metals 102, 103-104
  • Certification: None-Technique class
  • Duration: 3-4 hrs
  • Required for: construction of folded forms, using folds in jewelry and sculpture


Description This class is designed to explore the realm of folding metal repeatedly to create interesting forms. This could create a piece all on its own or be the base for further process exploration. The tools used in this process are minimal. Classes are scheduled quarterly on our website. The class covers some basic fold patterns, proper tool use and order of operations, as well as resource suggestions, idea paths and much more.

Metals 309: Lost Wax Casting[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100-101, suggested prerequisite classes: Metals 102, 103-104, Metals 400
  • Certification: candidate may be certified for independent use of casting equipment upon completion of 3 successful casts
  • Duration: 3 classes,2-3 hours each
  • Required for: casting an object in metal. Independent use of casting equipment, earned through three additional casting events.


This class instructs on how to produce a metal object by way of the Lost Wax method. Wax is carved, then a mold is made of it. The mold is then placed in the kiln to melt out or lose the wax. The molten metal is then poured into the plaster cavity. It Provides:

  • Safety First!
  • In depth introduction to Wax carving
  • In depth introduction to investment (plaster mold)
  • Demonstration of processes
  • Hands on practice and safe use of equipment.
  • Open studio time for additional casts required for certification. (Check our website for Open studio times)
  • Materials needed for first class.
  • List of extra personal equipment for final two classes.

Metals 310: Raising[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100. It is suggested that you complete the certification cycle. This will expedite your project process.
  • Certification: No certification is offered with this class.
  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours. If additional time is needed please consider attending our open studios.
  • Required for: Making bowls/vessels, anticlastic and clastic forms, moving metal without compressing.


Description This class is designed to instruct on the concept of moving metal without compression to create three dimensional objects from flat sheet using only a hammer and stake.

It Provides:

  • Tool review/intro
  • Resources for more in depth exploration, education, and tools
  • Materials needed to complete a project
  • Demonstration of processes
  • Hands on practice and ample work time
  • Open studio time for additional work time (Check our website for Open studio times)

Metals 311: Metal inlay[edit]

  • Prerequisite: Metals 100, it is also recommended to complete the certification series (101-104) to expedite your learning in this course.
  • Certification: None offered
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Required for: Stone and metal inlay to jewelry and sculpture
  • Class offering: Twice per year, unless more interest is shown. Contact shop captain to schedule individual training.


Description This class is designed to instruct the process of laying metal or stone into existing metal through pressure and chemical bonding.
It Provides:

  • Instruction and demonstration of preparation and processes
  • Safe, hands on practice of processes
  • Tools and materials needed for completion of the project.
